Lips and eyes are the two most expressive focal points of the face. A significant portion of our emotions are expressed by the lips. Fuller lips are a sign of youth and beauty. Women with full lips have a special appeal which makes them more attractive and desirable.
As we get older our facial fat decreases and the face loses its fullness. Lips are no exception to this process of deflation. An attractive lip is one that has a distinct shape and looks full and plump. The lower lip is usually fuller than the upper lip. The attractive lower lip has a slight indentation in the center while the upper lip has a slight protrusion. These two features in conjunction with the general contour and fullness is what distinguishes the attractive from the unattractive lip.
Methods of Lip Enhancement include fat injections, placement of synthetic threads and injections of soft tissue fillers.
The problem with fat injections is that sometimes the injected fat dissipates irregularly leaving residual visible and palpable lumps. Synthetic threads can be tight and palpable and may feel unnaturally firm. In addition, these are permanent and their removal can be difficult. Soft tissue fillers which are various forms of naturally occurring Hyaluronic Acid when injected into the lips, gives the most natural results in terms of shape and feel.
Injection of soft tissue fillers has to be performed accurately and conservatively as over injected lips look very unnatural. Restylane is my filler of choice because lips that are injected with Restylane look and feel normal.
Prior to injection of Restylane the nerves to the upper and lower lips are anesthetized with local anesthesia similar to shots given before dental work. After the lips are numb, Restylane is injected slowly and precisely then it is gently sculpted into the natural shape and contour of the lips. Slight swelling is to be expected for one to two days after which the lips feel soft and natural.
