Botox and soft tissue fillers for smile lines and lip enhancement

As the face ages, smile lines and the cheek-nose folds become deeper.  The facial volume, which is a sign of youth, is reduced.  Skin drops and lines become deeper.  Although a face lift will pull and tighten the skin, it is incapable of eliminating the deep lines and creases around the mouth and the nose-cheek junction.  Fat injections have been used for several years with varying results.  The unpredictable results of fat injections are due to uneven absorption of the injected fat.  In addition, if fat is injected superficially, it may become lumpy and visible.

Modern fillers are various forms of Hyaluronic acid and Hydroxyappetite, which are naturally occurring materials in human tissue.  These fillers, which include Restylane, Juvederm, Radiesse, and others, are injected into the facial lines and tissues including the lips and the deep sunken grooves located between the lower eyelid and the nose. The results of these fillers are very dramatic, lasting between 4-12 months.  The skin is prepared with a topical local anesthetic cream and selective nerve blocks prior to injections, this is to avoid any discomfort.  I do not use permanent fillers because unlike absorbable fillers which dissolve over time, the permanent ones can not be removed. 

In women who have lost the fullness of the lips or have genetically thin lips, fillers such as Restylane and Juvederm can effectively restore the lacking volume.  Fuller lips are a sign of youth and beauty.  Lip injections must be performed consevatively following the natural contour of the lips in order to prevent the "duck lip" or "sausage lip" appearance, which we have all seen in some celebrities.

Botox is a substance that temporarily paralyzes muscles responsible for the unwanted frown and forehead lines and smile lines at the outer corner of the eyes.  Botox very effectively eliminates these wrinkles for up to 4 months.  To minimize discomfort, skin is precooled with ice.
