Traveling for Plastic Surgery

Patients travel long distances to receive plastic surgery from Dr. Ivan Thomas for a variety of reasons; referrals from other patients, limited access in the patient's geographic area, and seeking the most experienced and qualified specialist.

When traveling to Dr. Thomas' Century City Surgery center in Los Angeles, patients feel that a well deserved vacation and a little R&R can be coupled with a surgical procedure.

When It Makes Sense to Travel for Plastic Surgery

It makes sense for a patient to travel to a different U.S. location for surgery. Some reasons may be; there may not be local experienced doctors available to perform specific procedures. This may be the case for some of the more advanced procedures that Dr. Thomas performs such High Lateral Tension Tummy Tuck and Exoderm (a unique non-surgical face lift & highly effective acne scar treatment).

Traveling Patient Consultations

As part of the preliminary screening process, the patient will be asked a series of questions either via email or phone. Traveling patients can complete an online consultation form or email our

When traveling to Dr. Thomas' offices, whether they are traveling from out of state or from out of the country, patients will be asked to complete a Traveling Patient form prior to speaking with the doctor and staff over the phone. Once contacted by the staff, in most cases patients will be asked to submit their own series of before photos, which can be taken by a digital camera and emailed to our offices. The photos will be reviewed by Doctor Thomas so that he can evaluate the patient's current atheistic attributes and compare them to their desired aesthetic goals and prescribe the best possible treatment.

The Traveling Patient Pre & Postoperative

Once a surgery date is agreed upon, patients will be required to put down a 30 day refundable deposit to hold the surgery date. The pre-operative packet will be emailed or mailed and the patient will be required to visit a local doctor to evaluate candidacy for surgery. Ongoing communication with the surgeon and or consultant is conducted by phone and email. The procedure balance is paid, scheduled and the comfort list is prepared. Comfort lists may include transportation information to the medical facility or to the hotel as well as preoperative instructions which includes a list of food & drugs not to take pre & postoperative.

Dr. Thomas' medical facility is close to a choice of hotels that meet the needs of traveling patients. The recovery period after surgery varies depending on the surgery.

Activities associated with postoperative traveling may restrict the patients and increase the risk for complication. For example the ability to reposition the body or face may be limited if traveling in a car, airplane, or train. Heavy bag lifting, standing for long periods of time and limited access to normal comforts may compromise recovery and are things to consider.

Traveling patients will consult with Doctor Thomas on how much time will be needed to stay in the Los Angeles area.

Understanding Plastic Surgery Credentials - U.S. & Abroad

Dr. Thomas' surgery facility is fully certified and Dr. Thomas is certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery and a Member of the American Society of Plastic Surgeons. The American Board of Medical Specialties is the only board that is able to name specialties in the medical field.

In the United States, there are accrediting agencies that certify medical facilities and medical providers. U.S. hospitals have peer review boards to further evaluate the doctor's surgical skill in given procedures. Doctors must obtain hospital privileges to perform a specific procedure at hospitals in America. Surgery abroad is not necessarily as standardized.

The training of doctors in other countries may be dramatically different than in the United States. After becoming a doctor, the extra training to become a plastic surgeon varies widely as well. Also facilities abroad are privately owned and operated and may not be subjected to a rigorous or any certification process at all.

Uncertainty of where credentials may come from should also be a red flag for uncertainty of results.
