Brachioplasty better known as Arm Tuck or Arm Lift is an operation designed to remove excessive arm skin. Loose and hanging arm skin is an undesirable appearance for many individuals. The amount of excess skin is best noticed when the arms are held in horizontal position.
Women in particular are very self-conscious and try to hide the deformity by wearing long sleeves. Although laxity of the arm skin is part of our aging process it is also seen in certain individuals at a younger age.
Certainly, weight gain followed by weight loss is an important factor in a significant number of patients. After excessive weight loss, arm fat shrinks while the overstretched skin remains unchanged. When the skin excess is mild and is in conjunction with increased fat deposition, treatment of choice may be liposuction, as liposuction is known to cause slight shrinkage of the skin. Brachioplasty is performed when skin excess is extensive. This procedure removes the loose overhanging skin of the arms. Incisions for Brachioplasty are placed along the inner aspect of the arms in order to conceal the operative site as much as possible.
When there is excessive fat deposition in the areas and skin laxity is not an issue the procedure of choice is usually liposuction rather than Brachioplasty.
Surgery is performed under general anesthesia.
Recovery time is about 7-10 days.
Following Brachioplasty patients are not required to wear arm compression garments. These garments are worn only after liposuctioning of the arms.
